Healthy Lifestyle Habits that Can Reduce Stress in the New Year

The end of the year can be a stressful time, and it’s important to slow down and reset. A healthy lifestyle can help reduce stress heading into the new year.

  • Diet is essential- A healthy diet filled with fruits, vegetables, olive oil and Omega 3 foods such as salmon, nuts, and seeds can help reduce inflammation in the body and improve immunity as well. Think of a Mediterranean style diet that includes the above which fuels your body allowing it to also function properly through feelings of stress.

  • The gut is considered to be the second brain. A healthy gut can improve mood and alleviate feelings of stress.

  1. Consider taking a probiotic- probiotic rich foods include yogurt, kombucha, kefir and sauerkraut.

2. Add in more fiber. Fiber is a preferred food source for bacteria  in your gut and also works as a prebiotic ( food) for that probiotic to work. Fruits, vegetables, oats and beans are all rich in fiber.

3. Think about eliminating inflammatory foods like gluten, dairy and sugar. Many find their gut health improves with this type of elimination diet ( and can reduce inflammation in the body too).

  • Movement- moving your body releases muscle tension and can balance hormones allowing for stress relief. While the end of the year can be a busy time, taking time for yoga, a bike ride or even a walk after dinner are all fantastic ways to relieve stress.

  • Breathing and proper rest. Reducing cortisol in the body can be helpful to alleviate symptoms of stress that may include heart palpitations, heart rate and muscle tension. Be sure to take time for rest and proper sleep. Also note, long fasting periods and heavy workouts can increase cortisol levels for some individuals.

  • Supplementation- Stress can deplete Omega 3 stores, causing a feeling of increased stress. Omega 3’s have an adaptive role in stress management and improving mood, and studies show that they can help with reducing perceived stress. ( Sponsored)
