What Every Woman Over 40 Needs to Know About Liver Health

As women reach midlife, they often hear about weight gain, hot flashes, and mood swings . However, liver health is rarely discussed. Being aware of liver health is an important part of a healthy aging plan.

As estrogen starts to decrease during peri-menopause and menopause, our bodies hold on to estrogen as estrogen has many benefits including cardio-protection and cognitive enhancement. Estrogen is produced in adipose tissue as we enter midlife and our bodies hold on to fat in our midsections and thighs where estrogen is produced for those beneficial effects. As women gain weight in midlife, they may not realize that they can also be gaining weight in their liver.

Understanding Liver health

The liver does contain some fat. However, if fat reaches 5 to 10 percent of the liver's weight the result is considered fatty liver ( steatosis). Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is one such condition. One in three postmenopausal women will experience non-alcoholic fatty liver disease which can lead to inflammation in the liver and potentially scar tissue. This can then lead to fibrous tissue and cirrhosis of the liver, and so much more. In addition, people with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity are also at higher risk of developing fatty liver.

It is important to keep the liver healthy. The liver is responsible as a detoxification pathway in our body. It also assists in converting nutrients into energy, acts as a storage facility for iron, aids in digestion, immunity, and so much more. Often, women do not even realize they have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.A liver function test performed by a doctor can indicate fatty liver disease. However, there are some symptoms to look for as well such as feeling nauseous or extremely fatigued. A yellowish hue to your skin or eyes is also an indication of poor liver health. Swelling in the legs, abdominal pain and digestive issues are also indications that you may have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Keeping Your Liver Healthy

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to take care of your liver, including preventing Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. This is an important matter that you should discuss with your doctor. However, there are lifestyle changes that can be incorporated into any wellness plan to reduce the risk of fatty liver.

Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is the first step to maintaining good health. A diet that is full of fruits and vegetables is a fantastic way to improve health. Adding cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, and cauliflower to your diet is wonderful for natural detoxification. Healthy proteins and seeds, such as flaxseeds and chia seeds, are also a perfect way to improve liver health. Consider a Mediterranean style diet which is a great way to maintain a healthy weight which is vital in preventing fatty liver disease.

Monitor Alcohol, Sugar, and Non-healthy fats

Minimizing sugar, alcohol and unhealthy fats is important for maintaining liver health. The American Heart Association recommends 25g of sugar for women and 37.5g for men. It is important to read all food labels because even so called 'healthy" foods such as yogurt and protein bars can contain high amounts of added sugar.

Reducing sugar intake, is also important for preventing various disease states such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes-related conditions. Monitoring sugar intake is important for overall healthy living and liver health.

Watch your medications

Certain medications can also cause a decline in liver health. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist to learn if you are taking any medications that may affect your liver. These medications include acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, various antibiotics, and anti-arrhythmic drugs.

Proper Movement

Move your body during the day. Studies show that walking for 30 minutes three times a week can help reduce fatty liver.

Limit Toxins in Skin Care and Environment

Toxins are in the air we breath, the food we eat and the products we use on our bodies and home. Toxins are substances that are not used in the body for energy and can accumulate causing fatigue, brain fog, inflammation and more. Decrease toxins when possible such as eating organic food, using natural cleaning products and using clean beauty. Reducing toxins can help aid the liver in the detoxification process.
